Ceramic costs more, and if the budget is the deciding factor, carbon is a good film and we will tell you so.

Window film is a laminate: polyester layers with an adhesive on the glass side and a scratch-resistant hardcoat facing the cabin. What sits between those layers decides how it performs. Cheap dyed film only darkens the glass, and the dye breaks down in the sun, which is where purple, bubbled tint comes from. Carbon and ceramic films get their shade and their heat rejection from particles bonded into the film instead, so the colour stays where it was on day one. NEXseries adds graphene, a single-atom-thick carbon lattice, alongside nano-ceramic particles to push infrared rejection further still.

Three numbers matter when you compare films. VLT, visible light transmission, is the shade: a 5% film lets 5% of the light through and a 70% film reads nearly clear. UV rejection is what protects your skin and keeps the dash, seats and trim from fading. IR rejection is the one you feel, since infrared carries most of the heat in sunlight, and it is the number that separates a good film from a great one.

The shade is personal, and it is also practical. 5% is full privacy and looks sharpest on a black vehicle, but it is dark to reverse through at night. 15 to 20% is the classic dark look. 35% matches the factory privacy glass on anything newer than 2017, so a 35 on the fronts blends straight into the back, and it still leaves good night visibility. 50% and up are for people who mainly want the heat and UV protection without much change to how the glass looks.

Tint is quoted by the window, and side glass is done in pairs so the vehicle stays symmetrical. Most people start with the front pair, matching the factory privacy glass behind, or go straight to every window behind the windshield.

If you are tinting most of the vehicle, a whole-vehicle package is the better value than the same glass quoted window by window.

Do not roll the windows down for three days. The adhesive needs that long to key, and a moving seal will drag the film off its edge.

Expect some haze and small water pockets for the first week or two while moisture escapes through the film. That is normal and it clears, so resist the urge to press it out. When you do clean the glass, use an ammonia-free cleaner and a soft cloth; ammonia breaks the film down and purples it.

British Columbia does not permit aftermarket tint on the windshield below the AS-1 line, or on the front side windows. Rear side and rear windows are unrestricted, as long as the vehicle has a mirror on each side once the rear glass is tinted.
